Grade 9 Online: Can Black and White French Movies Be Good?
Obviously, I think the answer to this question is yes. You?
I hope you enjoyed watching the first half of The 400 Blows, a very famous French movie about a city kid your age. Francios Trouffaut, the director, cared a lot about showing what life was like for young people. The director of a movie is like the author of a book. Some directors are so good at making movies, that people start calling them auteurs, which is French for "author."
The kid's name is Antione Doinel. The city is Paris. The year is 1959.
I think Antione shares a few qualities with Richard Wright, and a few qualities with some of you.
So here's your assignment: Summarize a scene from the movie, then describe a few details you remember. What do those details tell you about Antione's life? Compare and contrast his life to that of a teenager in Boston in 2011. You may include any comparisons to Black Boy that struck you while you were watching the film.
Feel free to surf the internet for information about the movie, Trouffaut, or auteurs. Just make sure to cite the source of any facts you mention. For details about how to cite according to MLA style, follow the link on this blog to the OWL at Purdue.
Your comment should be at least seven to ten sentences long, but don't stop there if you have more to say. Go on for as long as you like. At the end of your comment, ask a question. Feel free to include the answers to other students' questions in your comment. I'll read the comments as you post them. You must post by Sunday, April 24th, to receive full credit.
Enjoy your vacation. We'll watch the rest of the film when we get back.
Mr. Miller
P.S.
I know a few of you responded to original post with the Jim Crow poster. Today I revised that post and made it an extra credit assignment. I apologize for the confusion, but I do expect you to respond to this post.
You have a week to do it, so don't stress out. See you Monday.

In the movie, 400 Blows, there is a scene where Antione Doinel is in school with his classmates and strict teacher. Antione is called upon for punishment. This reminds me in Black Boy where Richard was called up for punishment by his insecure aunt, Aunt Addie. Although, instead of Antione getting his hand struck by a ruler, he is ordered to stand in a corner until recess is over. In Boston, a punishment like that to me is rare since I have never witnessed the "boy-sits-in-the-corner-with-a-dunce-hat" scene. After recess, Antione is caught writing on the wall saying pretty mean things about the teacher. Antione is ordered to clean it off. Given his behavior patterns, I predict he is a troublemaker and will go through pain, possibly physical and emotional. All in all, a pretty troubling life, especially since I saw he lives in a poor house. What else does Antione have in comparison to Richard?
ReplyDeleteIn the movie, "The 400 Blows" a kid named Antoine is first seen as a child who is mistakenly accused of disturbing the class. As the movie progresses we come to see that Antoine, at home, is bossed around often as well as not trusted. His parents aren't really surprised that he gets bad grades and they don't question it, either. Like Richard Wright of Black Boy, Antoine has no freedom in his household nor is he really trusted. Also, Antoine later discovers that his mother has been cheating on his father and in Black Boy, Richard discovers that his father left for another woman. Both characters know or knew that their family was falling apart. The beginning scene shows that Antoine often caused trouble or was wrongly accused of disturbing the class. His family was poor since it was evident that their house was quite small. His mother was demanding and seemed quite irritated most of the time almost like Aunt Addie or Uncle Tom of Black Boy. Antoine then, for once, skips school with his friend since they were going to be late anyways. In this way, could Antoine begin to stand up more for himself as Richard did when he fought those kids with a stick?
ReplyDeleteThe movie, 400 blows, is a classic movie ( if you try to watch anime on Hulu you can see it in the commercial) with very interesting scenes. A certain scene in which Antione overhears his parents argue can be related to children in Boston. Antione was trying to go to sleep but was overhearing his parents arguing about his mother staying at work very late "working very hard" . Antione, based on that scene, seems to be a very conflicted child who tries to not think about very bad issues. Many children in Boston can relate to this because a lot of them kids today have heard their parents argue about a very serious issues. I am Bostonian my self and overhear my parents argue many times about different issues while i am trying to sleep. This particular scene focuses on the issue of adultery. In the book "Black Boy" by Richard Wright Richard , the protagonist of the story, went through the same problem. Although the problem dealt with Richards father the idea was the same. Richards mom kept arguing with him about the lady he sees which leads to a divorce.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie, "400 Blows", Antione goes on The Turkish Twist with all his friends watching. Antione goes upside-down and tries to impress his watching friends, and succeeds. This scene shows me that Antione cares more about being popluar with friends, then having good grades and being with family. His parents also don't care that he is getting bad grades and not spending time with them. This is similar to a teenager's life in Boston because tennagers are always trying to impress people to get them to like us. Some teenagers pretend to not care about school and only care about looking cool and being popluar. In "Black Boy", Richard tries to impress his new peers by getting into a fight. This is similar to Antione in "400 Blows" because both these boys are trying to impress people, other than doing good in school.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie "400 Blows" there is a boy named Antonie who acts very similar to Richard in the text "Black Boy." Antonie is in school when he gets introuble with the teacher after getting caught doing silly things behind his back. Antonie is then put into a corner as punishment, but instead he takes it as a joke and writes something on the wall about the teacher. The teacher forces him to wash it off and then makes the class write an essay. You can see from the actions that Antonie commits are almost similar to those of Richard in the sense that both boys don't really like their teachers and wants the teachers to leave them alone. Both boys also have parents that really don't care about how they act in school and that results on how they act around other people. This scene is just like in Black Boy in which Richard gets into a argument with his teacher about how he had to refer to her as, but he didn't care. Both of these boys are being misguided which will soon lead to a big problem in their future, and this scene already shows the lack of controll that Antonie's parents have of him and they don't care much about it. I actually have parents that actually care a lot about how I act in school, and makes sure that I have good grades. If I act like Antonie does in this film I would be in a lot of trouble, and there would be a lot of consequences for my actions. But, there are some parents that do not care that much of how their child acts in school, as long as it is not something very severe, that can cause there son to be in a lot trouble with more than just the school.
ReplyDeleteAntione Doinel is the protagonist in the film "The 400 Blows" where he had an uneasy life as a city kid in the early years. Doinel is the typical city kid who dislikes having been told by anyone what to do, particularly his teacher in school. Doinel fins himself passing notes along with his classmates and by coincidence, the teacher caught him in the act. From there he received punishment from his teacher; having to stand in the corner of the classroom for the remainder of recess. Of course, like most kids, he would take punishment as joke and would find anyway to make the teacher more upset. Doinel wrote on the wall his thoughts about how bad of a teacher the man is. Doinel shoes no respect nor liking to his teacher, similar to how Richard of "Black Boy" disrespected his Sunday school teacher or rather his aunt. Richard was found guilty of eating in the room and having disrespected his aunt by no calling her by "Ms." Of course, Richard would care less if he could, he never had any connection towards his aunt and he never waned any teacher to order him around. Doinel and Richard share this trait of disobedience towards their mentors, they dislike people who challenges them for their behaviors. Compared to city kids of 2011, they led more difficult lives as where the kids today do not challenge the teacher and in return, no punishment.
ReplyDeleteThe "400 Blows" was an old movie but very realistic. Although it was black and white, it had some of the similarities with "Black Boy". I remember the part that Antione was lying that his mother was dead. This scene was the same in "Black Boy" which Richard lied his mother also was dead. Antione was a very bad and mischievous boy. He was in the opposite situation of Richard. Antione was not poor and not discriminated by other people. He did not know that he had to apprieciate everthing he had.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie The 400 Blows, it is very similiar to the book Black Boy. Children aren't treated equally or as respectfully as adults. Richard and Antione both have the same mind set, to prove adults wrong. When Antione saw his mother cheating on him, he took that as a way to do anything without getting into trouble. Richard did the same when he saw his father cheating on his mother, being treated with disrespect. Both boys felt abandoned and wanted to run away from their situations.
ReplyDeleteA scene in the movie "The 400 Blows" takes place in the home of Antoine Doinel. Antoine's mother does not take things easy on Antoine and doesn't respect him as her own son. The way Antoine's mother treats Antoine is similar to how Richard Wright's family treat Richard. Richard's grandmother disapproves of Richard's actions and sins. Uncle Tom dislikes Richard and thinks that Richard is disrespectful. Aunt Addie tries to discipline Richard by attempting to beat him. Today, teenagers in Boston are still mistreated by their parents and sometimes even abused. A question that I had in mind since the start of the movie is how does the title "The 400 Blows" relate to the movie itself?
ReplyDeleteIn 400 Blows,Antoine was falsely accused of interrupting the class because his classmate was passing around a picture of a naked woman and when it came to him, he was caught. although the picture didn't belong to him, he was still punished. this reminded me of Richard. he was also falsely accuse of eating nuts in class and making a mess on the floor by his aunt. this show how much there is a different today and before. before, u can accuse anyone without proof. but now, u have to have proof to accuse anyone of anything.everything have changed so much. since i didnt watch the whole movie, how did it end?
ReplyDeleteIn the movie the 400 blows the scene where Antoine and his family go out to the movies to distract his father from his mistake in burning a box shows that Antoine's life is hard. Being treated like a slave by his mother and abused by his father doesn't help how he behaves or his grades in school. After their enjoyable trip to the movies his parents by him an ice cream cone, which can compare to the life in Boston. Parents try to enlighten the mood and let kids try things for the first time like Antoine. Antoine's life can be similar to ours in Boston right now because of the pressure people put on us, on who we want to be when we grow up and how they want us to act. My question for this is why did they change the title to The 400 blows? Since the french titled meant to raise hell that would've been a better title because of the way Antoine behaviors affects his actions, this also had nothing to do with corporal punishment. O_O
ReplyDeleteIn the movie, The 400 Blows, Antione Doinel is a young French boy who lives in Paris in 1959. He lives with only his mother and father in a small rundown building. In school, he gets scolded for things that he did not even do. One day, he decides to skip school and go with his friend to play around, using the lunch money he received from his father. While he heads home, he sees his mother and tries to hide so he doesn’t get caught. However, he ends up catching his mother kissing another man. His mother turned out to be cheating on his father with another man. These details tell us that his life must not be that good since his mother went to find relief in another person. His teacher didn’t seem to like him that much either. Antione also gave in to peer pressure to skip school, showing that he was easily persuaded. His life can actually be similar to many teens over the city of Boston nowadays. There are students who are poor and live with their parents, scraping together as much money as possible. Skipping school is also common and the peer pressure nowadays can lead to worse things. Adultery happens once in awhile too so its not that uncommon. Doinel’s life is actually really similar to a teen in the 2011 times. My question is that do you think Antione would be able to survive in the 20th century?
ReplyDeleteIn the movie,"400 Blows", Antoine face different problems. At the beginning of the movie a group of Antoine's classmates were passing around a picture of a half naked womam. Antoine was then punished by having to stand in the corner of the room. Richard from "Black Boy" was also punished when he misbehaved. One time he was struck with a ruler. I see Richards punishment as more harsh. Teenagers today do not have the same punishments as they use to. Now the mostly lose the use of their technology, like cell phones, laptop etc. My question is, why is the movie called "400 Blows" ?
ReplyDeleteIn the film “The 400 Blows”, directed by Francois Trouffaut, the protagonist, Antoine Doinel, suffers through the pitfalls of many of the same fates that are faced daily by children in Boston as well as all over the world. When Antoine and a friend opt to skip school, they catch Antoine’s mother snogging another man; being unfaithful to Antoine’s father. The aspect of “cheating” on a spouse has become a second language in the 21st century, destroying families and crumbling the lives of all that are affected, particularly the children. Unfortunately, the streets of Boston run amok with infidelity, broken homes, and divorce. A few scenes later, once Antoine had gone home, his absence from school still completely unnoticed, his mother and father began to argue about her “working the night shift” and not being paid any extra cash. Antoine lay awake listening to his parents arguing, one of the many traumatic events that plague children right here in Boston, an event that repulses even the coldest of hearts. Classic films such as “The 400 Blows” are often very relevant in today’s ever changing world and they will forever remain classics.
ReplyDeleteAntoine is the main character of a film "The 400 blows", he portrays the average life of young people in 1960s of paris. One of the scenes in the film is when Antoine lies to his teacher. Antoine's excuse for skipping school was that his mother died. This was the same excuse that Richard used in "Black Boy". Lying is also a common trait found in boston teenagers. When people undergo large amounts of stress and pressure they tend to release their stress in unhealthy ways, And these actions often leads to lying. This sort of incidents happens all the time. My question is where to does lying take you in life?
ReplyDeleteThe 400 Blows, is a movie that touches the hearts of the audience. In one scene specifically, we see the main character, Antione Doinel, get mistreated by the teacher. The scene foreshadows how Antoine's life is. Antoine is always under some kind of oppression and he always seems to "take" it in silence. The teacher has such a strict hand over the students that you can sense the power the teacher possesses over the students. Of course, this behavior was commonly seen in the 1950's even before that time. In fact, in Black Boy, Richard encounters this same kind of treatment, in schools he attended. Richard and Antione both got accused by the teacher of things that they really had nothing to do with. Richard getting accused,in one episode, for eating even though it was the boy in front of him, and Anione Doinel getting accused for passing things around even though all the boys around him had done the same. Today, the common teenager in Boston in 2011 is not oppressed like before. More specifically, the teacher does not physically punish a student for wrong doing.Present day teachers listen to what students have to say, unlike how Antione Doinel was oppressed and not heard. However, teachers still have the final say to every situation and some teachers obviously still give homework and get right to business.
ReplyDeleteFrom what i saw of the movie, 400 Blows there are many similarities between the movie and Black Boy, one of them being that like Richard's parents in the start of the book, Antione's parents are also having trouble in their relationship, both are unhappy in their marriage. it's also clear that Antione and his family do not have alot of money like Richard and his family. The only difference is that Antione's mother is the one having the affair and not his father. Another similarity is how Antione is constantly getting in trouble by the teachers and mostly for the things he didn't do. In Black Boy, Aunt Addie, insecure in her position of authority, blamed and humiliated Richard in front of the class. but instead of being rapped on the hand by his teacher, Antione is told to go stand in the corner and be excused from recess. In boston, i'm pretty sure striking a student is...illegal (but i could be wrong). I'm sure alot of children know what it's like to be humiliated in front of their peers by a teacher. alot of kids go through alot of bad things and are suffering just to get by.

ReplyDeleteIn the movie, “400 Blows” there’s a scene where Antinone is smoking a cigarette. Apparently in his country, you might see this commonly, and might as well say the same for Boston. I’ve seen a twelve year old smoking, as bad as it sounds, it’s true. In the movie, a child got his punishment from a ruler struck onto his hand. In Boston you wouldn’t see that, but instead seeing a boy having his recess taken away. This movie was pretty old, so things could’ve changed, but then again, they might not have. Seeing this child’s behavior, I’ll conclude that this child was a troublemaker and is known to be one.
ReplyDeleteP.S it's Hassan :)
In the movie "400 Blows" there is a sceane were Antonio is punished by his teacher. This reminds me of teh sceane in black boy when Richard is demined by the communist. Both characters are demeened by a "higher authority". Both the boys however are demeaned for doing what others where doing, or in other words, trying to fit in. In teh movie, Antonio is sco;ded for goofing around with the other troublemaking students in his class, and in black boy Ricjard is made mochery of for being inteligent, however he was with the intellecual group of people in his time.

In the movie "the 400 Blows" I have remembered the treatment Antonio was recieving in school. The awfull treatment in school relates to Richard's treatment from his Aunt's class. At home he was neglected in education by his grandma and in this movie Antonio is neglected by his mother's careless actions. They both only wanted to do the "normal" things that others are doing but it seems to be extra hard work for them because they were blocked by those around them. As teenagers in Boston today, many have been treated horrbily at home but they wouldnt show it to the world. Although it is alot easier for them to get education now, it is still hard for some to keep the balance at home and school just as it is for both Antonio and Richard. One question I have is that what does the "400 Blows" represent? and how does it relate to the story?

One scene in the movie "The 400 Blows" that I found interesting and I was also able to connect to as a teenager in Boston was when only Antoine and his father were together and they were getting ready to eat. Antoine’s father told him that his mother was busy and wouldn’t make it for dinner. As a result, the two cooked some eggs together and were talking to each other. The conversation was mostly about Antoine and his father asked him a lot of questions about his studies at school. Antoine’s father emphasized that Antoine had to make himself known in the classroom and that he had to do well in school in order to succeed in life. Conversations about school are very common between parents and their kids, especially in Boston. What I found interesting about the conversation and everything that happened after was that Antoine’s parents didn’t actually do anything to help Antoine with school. All his father did was tell him what to do and expected it which I think is different compared to the way students in Boston are treated. The society portrayed in the movie seems to be one of strict enforcement where the student is expected to do something and if he/she didn’t, then they were beaten. In Boston there is more of a helpful, hands on approach to encouragement but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the student would be doing better. The movie compares more with the book "Black Boy" when it comes to enforcement of education because in Black Boy, Richard was also expected to do everything without being helped by the parents even at the young age that Richard as well as Antoine were at. Another way that Black Boy and the movie are similar is that they both consist of families that are broken or in the process of breaking. In "The 400 Blows", Antoine’s mother wasn’t home that night because she was having an affair, and in Black Boy, Richard’s father left the family because of an affair as well. There is a pattern which leads me to think that Antoine, is going to feel the same way Richard felt, which was that a piece was missing to their life as a result of not having a complete family from a young age.

In the movie "400 Blows", Antoine is being critized by this lady with a hat based on the fact that i guess he wrote an insulting letter to his father. This relates to Black Boy is because there were times when Richard said some things that he didn't mean to say out of frustration. In a way, we can relate this to the real world is because people now a days say a lot of things that they don't really mean to say out of anger. i think that people have to just learn to control what they say around certain people and at certain times. The earlier they realize this the better it is for them later on. Also, in both situations both Richard and Antoine ended up getting in trouble.

RT it took me so long to post this
Towards the beginning of The 400 Blows, Antoine and his friend skips school to hang out at an arcade. On their way home from the arcade, Antoine and his friend catches Antoine’s mother kissing another man. His mother is aware that Antoine saw her; but neither says a word. When he finally gets home, he realizes that he needs an absence note, which he never writes. His mother comes home late that night after working “overtime” for her boss. In bed, he overhears his parents argue about his mother’s late night work, and how his father believes that she is having an affair with her boss. Antoine’s life relates to a teenager because they do not always have the motive to work hard; they like slacking off once in a while, and being rebellious. Skipping school is probably not real news to teenagers in Boston. Attempting to forge an absence note is not strange either. Along with that, many teenagers have rough lives; such as an unstable family, like Antoine’s. His mother is unfaithful and she appears selfish around the house. His father is not understanding and demands authority. My question is; will Antoine’s father find out what his wife is really doing when she works late?
ReplyDeletein The 400 Blows, Antoine often tries to impress people, Richard in Black Boy did the same. There is a scene in the movie where Antoine skips school with a friend, this is similar to teenagers in Boston because neither Antoine nor present-day teenagers really want to go to school. when he skipped school, he went with a friend to a carnival-type of place, this shows that kids just want to have fun. most kids are like that now too. Antoine also has trouble at home and he often fights with his parents, just like how Richard has conflicts with the people in his home.

The movie, "The 400 blows", is about a boy named Antoine that find himself making troublesome choices. For example, in a scene from the movie, Antoine was misbehaving in class, and he was punished. When Antoine came home, he chose to rather not tell his parents. The choice of not telling his parents, tells me that Antoine really fears his parents' punsihment and discipline. Also, as Antoine comes home from school, he sets up the table and prepares for dinner. Obviously, this tells me that Antoine respects his parents and that his parents expects more from a teenager like him. The lifestlye of Antoine's differs from a lifestyle of a teenager in Boston in the year 2011, because there are not much teenagers that you see setting up the table for dinner or help their parents buy groceries for them. However, when Antoine decides not to tell his parents his behavior in class, that's very simliar to teenagers in Boston. Teenagers in Boston gets in trouble more often, and the trouble they make are not reviewed to their parents. Why do teenagers in 1959 respect thier parents more than teenagers in 2011?
ReplyDeleteIn the first scene of the movie, 400 Blows, a strict teacher punished Antoine. One of Antoine's classmates passes around an inappropriate picture while the class was writing their papers. When Antoine receives the picture and passes it on to another classmate, the strict teacher caught him. His teacher makes him stand in the corner of the classroom and strip Antoine his recess privileges for the day. During the recess period, he wrote a horrible poem about his teacher by calling him Sourpuss. Thus, his teacher yells at him to clean up the mess. Antoine has to find the sponge and water himself. Antoine's life was like Richard's life. He had to do chores in the house. Also, his family wasn't rich.
ReplyDeleteIf a teenager of Boston in 2011 were to do acts similar to those of Antoine, their punishment involves detention, suspension or expulsion from school. Antoine simply just lost his fun time at school. Today, there are more rules and laws to follow than 1959. The government is more serious now than the past. Antoine's behavior in school in 1959 wasn't taken seriously. If it was to happen today, it could ruin a teenager's life and his/her reputation.
This punishment towards young French boys for their bad deeds at school was far less severe than those to Richard from the book "Black Boy." Richard was punished by Aunt Addie for eating walnuts in class and was struck by her ruler. Pain was punishment in the Jim Crow era. Pain is a lesson taught to the one who commit sins. On the other hand, losing recess was punishment towards Antoine. -Why is bad behavior not taken upon seriously back in 1959 as it is today in 2011?
The movie "400 Blows" Directed by Francois Truffaut. Stars a boy named Antoine Doinel he’s a mischievous little boy who skips school. But he's not the only person in his household that has been misbehaving. Antoine catches his mothering while he was skipping school with another man. Because of skipping he is forced to make up an excuse he told his teacher his mother had passed away the day he wasn’t at school. Shocked and sadden by the news Antoine’s teacher goes easy on the poor boy. I’m not sure but, I think he was dragged to the back of the class room and was beaten because his teacher figured out that he has lied about his mothers death ? But so far the movie "400 Blows" is interesting. Because It seems like Antoine’s actions are being influenced by his surroundings.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie 400 Blows Antoine Doinel and is father have a really good relationship unlike Richard and his father. Richard doesn't like his father nor does he have a relationship with him. Richard's father left him,his siblings and his mother alone to marry someone else hoping to become rich. Since Richard father left such a young age he never got to experience or have father & son bonding like Antoine does with his father. Antoine had someone to help him and someone to talk to, Richard didn't which led him to fighting and doing other inappropriate things. For example, when Richard was having problems with his mom he had no one to talk to about it but Antoine had his father to confide in . Antoine's life is similar to a Teenager in the year 2011 because some teens confide in one parent about the other.
ReplyDeleteNia Campbell, Section 2
In the movie 400 Blows, Antoine used an excuse for skipping class saying that his mother died. His teacher believed him and treated him differently after that. However, his parents found out and he got into trouble. In Black Boy, Richard also uses the excuse of his mother dying to his boss. But his boss did not believe him. In Boston, many teenagers uses excuses in order not to get into trouble. It is similar to Antoine's life because excuses are often made up and not true. I wonder why Antoine said his mother died and not his father.

In the movie "The 400 Blows", there is a relation between the protagonist Antoine, and the main character, Richard in the book "Black Boy". When the movie started, Antoine seems like a regular french child but then in the scene at school, the teacher punishes him for misbehaving. This reminded me of Richard when he had problems at school. Throughout the movie, they go further into his life and show that his mother was cheating on his dad. This can relate with Richads father abandoning the family. Antoine is also a boy that skips school. by this, we can see that he is a troublemaker and this can compare to many teenagers today skipping school and using false excuses to get themselves out of it, In BlacK boy, incidents of Richard causing trouble also occur. They are like the same person living in different countries. ---Sidali Beriane Sec.6
ReplyDeleteThe movie 400 Blows has a scene that could potentially relate to a scene in Black Boy. At one point in the movie, Antione Doinel, the main character, gets punished by the teacher for doing something that was wrong in the eyes of the teacher. But the thing was that Antione had not done anything wrong. It was his peers doing the wrong things while Antione was not. This part of the movie could clearly relate to a scene in Black Boy. At one point in the book, Richard is unfairly punished by his teacher. He was being punished for eating during class. But the truth was that it was in fact one of Richard’s friends who was eating and not him. As you can see, in both scenes, the two main characters are wrongly accused of doing something wrong when in reality both had nothing to do with it. Both the movie and the book could be compared to the life to that of a teenager in Boston in 2011. Now a days, there are always examples of teachers accusing other students for doing things that someone else might have done. But the punishment to a student might not be as cruel as the punishments from the 1950s.

In the movie, 'The 400 Blows', the main character Antione Doinel seems to be the trouble maker in his class. There is a scene in which Antione is skipping school and catches his mom kissing another man that isn't his father. I am not sure how long it will take until Antione's father finds out. In the book Black Boy, Richard's parents relationship also breaks apart. In this case Richard's father leaves his family. Both of these boys are going through struggles with their families, and that is very common now with a teenager in Boston in 2011. Not many people have their mother and father together, and sometimes that leads the child to act up at school or other places. My question is, Will Antione's father find out soon about his wife's affair?
ReplyDelete-Angela Villareyna Section:6
In the movie "400 Blows" Antiones interaction with his teacher was very similar to Richard's. In "400 Blows" Antione was caught with an innappropriate picture and was accused of it being his. This is similar to when Richard is accused of the crushing the walnuts. Both are humilated in front of their peers, but refuse to tell who the picture/walnuts belong to because they don't want to get their friend in trouble. In boston, I think teachers now a days would have more tolerance and wouldnt just accuse one student. I also think that kids today would know how to handle the situation better, because kids thses days are more likely to talk back to their teacher. Also, the teachers can't hit the students like they could back then, so the student wouldnt be afraid of argueing back.

"4oo Blows" is a movie about a boy named Antione Doinel. Antione skips school one day with his friend, Rene. While skipping school, Antione catches his mother kissing another man on the street. He says nothing about it to his father when he comes home. The next day, Antione lies to his teacher about skipping school and says his mother died. In the middle of class, Antione's parents shows up. Antione's father smacks him across the face infront of everyone and tell him he will be punished at home. After school, antione was too scared to go home so he ran away and hid in a printing plant. Antione is the restricted but rebellious type just like RIchard Wright from "black boy". In modern society, a teenager living in 2011 would not be stupid enough to lie to a teacher about their mother dieing. Modern teenagers have a more complex brain than Antione. If the teenager was ever to skip school, they'll write the note themselves and forge a signature or they might just come clean to their parents. The teenagers will know not to run away because they won't last long on their own. Antione says nothing to his father after he sees his mother kissing someone else. A modern teenager would probably do the same but He/she will confront his/her mother about it and try to figure something out. Back then, Antione's parents were superior to him so he couldn't really defy them. In modern societies, teenagers can talk to their parents as if they're talking to their friends.

400 Hundred Blows the French Movie is quite similar to the Novel, Black Boy by Richard Wright. The movie is about an adolescent boy growing up in a society and learning new things around him. One comparison is that in 400 Blows, the teachers are very strict as so are the teachers in Black boy. When Richard got in trouble in school, he was beaten with a ruler by his aunt and yelled at by his grandmother. In the Movie, Antoine was strictly said to stand in the corner and miss recess. Just like in Black Boy, during recess some boys were fighting. They could have been fighting for respect just like Richard used to do. Another similarity is when Antoine was accused for possessing an inappropriate picture even though it did not belong to him. In Black Boy Richard was accused of eating walnuts in class even tho he was not the person eating them. The similarities demonstrated above are examples to prove that the main character in the movie, 400 Blows (Antoine) and the novel Black Boy (Richard) are similar and develop in a similar society.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie "400 Blows," the scene where Antione is questioned by his teacher why he was absent from school the previous day is similar to a scene in Black Boy where Richard was questioned by his boss. Richard's boss asked Richard why he didn't show up for work for the last few days and Richard replied his mom died. Antione said the same thing to his teacher and Antione's teacher believed him completely. If a modern teenager were to use the same excuse in the same situation, people would have a hard time believing him/her. I think teenagers back in the day were a little more trustworthy because they could be physically abused by their parents if they didn't behave. However, it is not always the case. Something all societies have in common is the aspect of how teenagers never like to snitch on each other.

Yes, I do think that black and white French movies can both be good. At a moment in the movie, Doinel is skipping school. Doinel is accompanied by a friend who persuaded Doinel to go. From the fact that Doinel willingly misses school, I can infer that Doinel has lost interest in school. Loss of educational interest is common among teens our age in Boston, and also in Black Boy. Richard Wright often has to miss school due to going to work or moving away. Numerous teens miss class simply because the teens do not like a teacher. While playing hooky, Doinel witnesses his mother cheating on his father. Affairs also regularly occur in Boston, but most children do not witness affairs occurring. In Black Boy, Richard’s own father leaves Richard’s mother for another woman.

ReplyDeleteSitting down at his desk, Antione begins the first scene in the movie of The 400 Blows. As a classmate blows a whistle, the teacher is quick to turn back and accuse Antoine of doing it. Not being able to prove that antione didn’t disturb the class; the teacher went on and sternly punished him. This scene can be the most relatable to the text in the novel Black Boy, where Richard is in Aunt Addie’s church school. Even though Richard did not drop the walnuts on the church floor, the teacher wouldn’t take his word for it and Richard was punished for something he didn’t do. As in Black Boy, this incident illustrates the home life that Antione led. Further in the movie we see as Antione struggles with the reality that he can be the problem for his parents arguing, and eventually separation. As he was blamed in the classroom, Antione became the one to blame in his parents’ life also. Black Boy and The 400 Blows are able to detail many of the struggles a teenager in 2011 faces, and compares the era of 1959 with the now. I believe that teenagers now, like in 1959, usually are confused about the issues that face their parents when things like a divorce come up. Children are still left in the shadows when it comes to these “grown-up” issues, and blame themselves for what happened. One thing that is different I think would be the education. Teachers have more of a desire to teach and expect students to want to learn. Whereas in the 1960’s, teachers were guided more toward discipline than teaching. So, does anyone ever end up looking after Antione since he had runaway? And doesn’t anyone find that similar to when Richard ended up in the homeless shelter?
ReplyDeleteIn the movie " 400 Blows" there's a scene where the main character, Antione skips school with a friend and witnesses his mother kissing on another man other than his father. When he see this he tried to walk faster by them, though him and his mother make eye contact he doesn't say a word to her. That night when he got home he didn't say anything to his father, they just went on with their lives like nothing had happened. He didn't say anything to his mother either. I feel as if this relation to the life of teens today because we see thing that are wrong all the time and don say a word, maybe is because people are scared, or just don't want to be involved in the aftermath. i guess those are reasonable reasons, but it doesn't make it right not to say anything. I feel as if this scene goes with they saying " what you don know won hurt you " this is because Antione didn't tell his father, though it seems that he already suspected something, he kept it to himself. His father doesn't know that his wife is cheating on him. I'm pretty sure if he found out, he'd be devastated.

ReplyDeleteIn the movie, "The 400 Blows", there's a scene where Antione Doinel waits at home for his mother. While he waits, he sets up the table for dinner. When his mom came back home, she had him grab her slippers, and she gives him money to go out and get flour. As he goes out to get flour, he overhears a conversation with a women outside. On his way back home, he sees his father. Back at home, his mom tells his father that she doesn't want to go to the race on Sunday, and he accuses her of having an affair. Later, Antoine and his friend catches his mom kissing another man. This tells us that Antione's mom has him do a lot of the work at home. Most teenagers in Boston can sort of relate to this because they have personal family issues at home too.
ReplyDeleteDuring a part of "The 400 Blows" , Antione decides to skip school with his friends. While Antione was walking back home, he saw his mother kissing another guy. Although, that night, Antione does not speak to any of his parents about what he saw. The next day when he returns back to school, he lied to his teacher and said his mother died. That same day, Antione’s parents shows up at school and his father slaps him across the face. Antione’s father told him that he will be punished when he gets home. As a teenager in Boston, no teenager with common sense or without common sense would make such excuse as a reason to skip school. Teenagers would use less serious excuses such as “feeling sick”. Honestly, Antione’s excuse was very stupid especially when he could have made a more believable excuse.
ReplyDeleteIn the French Movie, "400 Blows" had many scenes that relate to the average lives of people everywhere. The scene that struck to me was Antoine's resolved determination to leave his home and run away until he could prove to his parents that he was a true man. The reason why Antoine wanted so badly to run away, was because he tried to lie, to excuse himself from being absent the day before, which was because he was skipping. But as things turned out, Antoine was caught in his lies, as his parents come up to his school. Antoine's lie was that his mother had passed away. As a result, Antoine didn't want to go home, for his parents were sure to be disappointed and ashamed of their son's misconduct. This relates to an average teenager today because it shows how people today don't want to confront their problems. Instead of facing their problems and faults, they run away and try to find a way out of things. Even today, teenagers feel great weight from the people around them, to live up to expectations, and when the people who see them everyday show disappointment in their eyes, it kills the teenagers inside. It hurts, even if it's just a parent, or a friend, or even someone younger than you. People choose to run away from the things that hurt most, because they don't want anything to do with it. People who are handicapped, gay, straight, "ugly", weak, stupid, ridiculed everyday, or beaten constantly are always faced with disappointment because they don't live up to expectations. So in turn, they run away to different places, to run away from their problems, and some even take their lives as a final measure to not deal with everything they have to go through everyday.
ReplyDelete"400 Blows",the French Movie, had many scenes that relate to the everyday lives of young teens everywhere in 2011. One particular scene that struck out to me was when the main character, Anthony, was being disciplined by the headmaster. This relates to the lives of teens everywhere because about every single teen I know has gotten in trouble with their parents or a supervisor. This also ties back to Anthony skipping school with a bunch of friends. Yes, he knew it was wrong but it sometimes feels so right. This relates to the life of an average teen today because again most teens has skipped school or class or an event with a certain adrenalin rush thats makes it feel so good.
ReplyDeleteIn the French Movie, "400 Blows", Antione can relate to people in Boston as well as Richard Wright. Antione has trouble at home with his parents. Mostly his mom. In one scene Antione is trying to sleep and over hears the screams and yells of his mom and dad arguing. This almost everyone or everyone in Boston can relate to, hearing their parents argue. Although this doesn't really relate to Richard Wright there are other things that do. Richard is positioned as an outcast to his peers and community. Antione in a way is as well. Antione is the one who gets in trouble and stands in a corner as Richard is pushed away by everyone else mentally and not accepted. Antione also seems not to be accepted by his mom since she wants him to leave to go to school after Antione saw her kissing another man other then his father. As harsh as that may be im sure many kids, teens, or adults can relate to that too, and maybe even to Richard as well.

ReplyDeleteThe movie “400 Blows” is alot alike the book Black Boy.” There is one scene in 400 Blows where Antoine disobeys his teacher and refuses to pass his test up when asked. Not passing up his test made him miss recess. This is like a scene in Black Boy when Richard refuses to read a speech written by his principal. Both disobeyed persons in authority in a school but there is a difference. Richard understands the importance of school as a key to his future, even teaching himself to read and write on his own time. Antoine only saw school as place to be during the day. Today, Antoine would be seen as a kid with behavior problems. He was a difficult student, even making faces at a teacher behind his back. A kid like Antoine would require more time from a teacher as the teacher would try to figure out what was causing him to act out. In today’s classroom, teachers are more flexible as they try to accommodate different learning styles so there is less misbehavior in the classroom. Most kids today understand the importance of education to their future. Antoine would be child with many problems today and would need extra help. If Antoine understood the importance of education to his future do you think he would try harder and be more respectful?

ReplyDeleteWhen I was watching the movie 400 blows it made me remember some scenes in the book Black Boy. One scene was when Antoine was being punished in school by his strict teacher this reminded me of Richard when his Aunt/Teacher punished him harshly in school. But in the movie Antoine isn't beaten like Richard was in Black Boy. Now in these mpdern times here in Boston you wouldn't see such type of punishment like being beaten or getting forced to sit in a corner forced to stare at a wall being seperated from learing with the rest of your class. The most you would see would be a trip to the principles office for a very long time.
In the movie, 400 Blows, there was this boy named Antoine and he was accused by the strict teacher for disturbing the class. Antoine was being punished for what he didn't do. The teacher at that school wasn't really skilled at teaching and he was really strict about how the student act. What I mean when the teacher isn't skill is that he tried to teach the students swear words that was in English. 400 Blows is somewhat different than Black Boy because Antoine was put into jail for stealing and in Black Boy, you will get killed by the white people. In the scene where Antoine's mother was kissing another man, it is somehow similar when Richard saw the woman and the man kissing in the hotel. Antoine's father was trying to tell Antoine bit by bit on what his mother is doing. Antoine and Richard tried to run away when they went through trouble. 400 Blows is similar to Black Boy in many ways but there are also many differences which we are going to find out.
ReplyDeleteOne day as Antoine is walking the streets with his friend instead of being at school, he saw his mom kissing a man he didn't know. He didn't tell anyone about this and sort of overcame it. this is similar to Black Boy where Richard Wrights father had left his mother for another woman. We are yet to find out whom this mysterious man is. I think ANtoine not talking to his father about this or asking his mother about the man tells us that he is not very social with his family and thats probably because they are very strict and his mother yells at him a lot.
ReplyDelete-@Andrew Lin Well actually i think bad behavior WAS taken more seriously back then. I mean, they would beat children in school. Today they send you to the office or they don't do anything at all.-
Antoine's relationship with his parents aren't as good as relationships between most parents and children today. Will Antoine finally speak up and save the family or will it collapse like Richards family
In the French Movie, "400 Blows", Antione can relate to many kids in today's society, as well as Richard Wright from "Black Boy". Richard and Antione share one particular thing in common-stubbornness. Richard and Antione were very stubborn as children. However Richard and Antione were stubborn in different ways. Antione liked to skip school, steal and lie to his parents a lot. Richard was destructive, he did things like killing kittens and burning down a house, he could be rude at times, telling his grandmother to kiss his butt, and also putting his head into places it did not belong. However Richard and Antione had one thing in common, they did not listen. Antione did not listen to his parents, and Richard did not listen when he was told to do something. Also Antione and Richard did not like punishment, especially when they deserved it.Richard ran away when he burnt the house down and so did Antione when he did something wrong, just because they did not want the punishment, showing that they can't take responsibilities for their own actions.Richard and Antoine both did not have good role model parents. Antiones mother was cheating on his father, and Richards father left his family to be with another woman, maybe its their home life that was affecting their attitudes, but we cannot determine, some kids are just rootless. Antoine and Richard are like some of the kids today because they like to steal, lie, and even run away because of their own disobedience. Moreover Richard grew up and is now even considered to be an 'intellectual', i do not know yet how Antione will end up, but i can predict that he will become a smart boy.

In this movie, Antoine promised his mother that he would write a good essay and do exceptional work in exchange for 1,000 francs. In this scene, you can tell that Antoine's mother believes that her son can prosper and tries to help him with that by giving him money as a proposition. When Antoine turned in his essay , he failed to achieve the goal his mother thought he would. His professor accused him of cheating , which he did. He took most of his ideas from Bazac* and changed up the words to make the story about his Grandfather. As a fellow student was directing Antoine towards the principle's office he ran. Later on, another classmate left the school and they both attempted to steal money and find a way of living.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie "400 Blows", Antione is in the class room where he is falsely accused by his teacher. He is accused of disturbing the class even though the teacher didn't really know who it was. This is closely related to the the scene in "Black Boy" where Richard's teacher blames him for dropping the walnuts even though it wasn't him. Today, kids are often fasley accused of things that they didn't do. Where there is no evidence of who did something, people often assume that it was the trouble makers. where there are problems teens are always the ones to blame. After the incident both Richard and Antoine had family problems and both were blamed these problems.
ReplyDeleteI remember that Antoine stole a liter of what seemed to be milk. He drank it because he had no other money or support at the time because he had ran away from his mother. This is similar to Richard in BB because he needs to survive off anything he can. Also, children in our era aren't as unfortunate as Antoine or Richard. They actually have to work to get their everyday bread or at least something. Children these days just ask for the money and they get it just like that. Antoine and Richard also are similar because they both are needy in different ways.
ReplyDeleteIn the movie "the 400 blows", Antoine skips school with his friend because he didnt do his homework. when he gets back to school, the teacher asks where he was, and Antoine tells him his mother died. later in school, he is treated like a king from the teacher, until his parents come in the door, and his father slaps him. this relates to todays teenagers because some skip school to try and act cool or get off the hook for something, then get in trouble with adults. this relates to blackboy because richard couldnt concentrate sometimes or would go somewhere with his gang for awhile to get away from evverything. -aisling
ReplyDeleteFour-Hundred Blows is about a teenage boy that goes through various problems in his life and lead him to steal, run away , and be rebellious. His actions remind me greatly of my generation today. In the scene in which Antoine steals his father's typewriter in order to receive money reminds me alot of teens today that steal to buy food, drugs or sneakers. Like Antoine the lack of money lead many people to rely on stealing not only to survive but also "fit in". Kids today feel like stealing isn't always a bad thing until you get caught. In Antoine's case his own father reported him to the police and he will be sent to a concentration camp , but in todays society if you're caught stealing the punishment isn't always that harsh. Its been almost 52 years since the film has been out and nothing in a teenagers life has changed much. Kids still steal, lie, cry, and act rebellious.

In the film, The 400 Blows, Antione Doinel is a young French boy who lived in Paris in 1959. In school, he gets reprimanded for things that he did not even do. One day, he chooses to cut school and go with his friend to frolic around, using the lunch money his father gave him. While he was walking back home, he saw his mother and tried to hide so he wouldn’t get caught. However, he ends up finding his mother kissing another man. His mother turned out to be cheating on his father. These details tell us that his life must not all that well since his mother went to find happiness in another man. His teacher seemed to have something against him, also. Antione also gave in to peer pressure to cut school, showing that he was effortlessly influenced. His life can actually be equivalent to many teenagers in the city of Boston nowadays. There are students who in poverty and live with their parents, gathering together as much money as they can get. Skipping school is also frequent and the peer pressure nowadays can lead to worse things. Faithlessness happens once in awhile, too, so it’s not that unusual. Doinel’s life is actually very comparable to a teen in this generation. My question is that do you think Antione would be able to endure in the 20th century?
ReplyDeleteThe movie 400 Blows is similar to black boy in manny ways. In the movie there is a boy named Antoine Doinel, he lives in paris with his mother and father but is lead in to a life of crime and disobedience and he runs away from home when he is faced with some problems. Poverty is one thing that is seen in the movie and in black boy. One day Antoine decides to skip school with his friend but he gets caught by one of his classmates. When he tries to lie his way out of the punishment it just makes things worst. Antoine lies and says that his mother died and that this is the reason why he was absent from school. This is similar to black boy because Richard was not very popular in school and he also runs away from home when he is faced with a dilema. The movie also demonstrates how your surroundings can affect your decisions and this is something that comes up alot in the movie and in black boy.
ReplyDeleteIn the film, "400 Blows," the kid, Antione decides to skip school and hang out with his friend. These boys' goal together is to enough money to live off of. Their way of getting this money, by stealing and marketing the items on an auction. Antione's parents, in my opinion, do not take enough responsibility, tolerance, or discipline towards Antione. The fact that Antione is trying to make a living and skip school suggests that he wishes to be a grown man, eligible to do as he pleases without anybody telling him the things he does not want to hear. The feelings of Antione about life and school can easily relate to many Bostonian Teenagers in 2011. As children grow up in school, they start to question the school system with the question, "Why do we go to school when we don't need more than half of it in real life?" This stumbles the teenager and allows him or her to think about alternative paths to take in life, such as dropping out of school to get a job, instead of "wasting" time in school. Antione has the same opinion about school as many teenagers do, that it's a waste of time. The question is, who's to blame for Antione's actions? Is it his misunderstanding parents, or Antione himself?

In the French film ,"400 Blows", the protagonist of the movie was Antione. During the movie, there was a scene where Antione chooses to bail on skip and skip it with his friend to go fool around the city. During this scene Antione discovers something that he shouldn't have discovered which was that his mother was cheating on his dad. The scene shows us that Antione lives in a unstable life. His family seem to be living quite well for themselves yet other problem arises such as cheating which is quite common nowadays to kids in Boston in 2011. Antione's parents argued multiple times throughout the movie and this is also quite common for kids in Boston to experience. A similarity to Black Boy to "400 Blows" was that the educational system wasn't that great students. My question is do you think Antione would be able to survive if he had live in the 21st century instead of the 20th century?

In the film 400 Blows the boy starts stealing from like stores and stuff and his mothers money and things like those, it relates to how in Black Boy how Richard jips off those white people at the movie theatre for money by hustling their tickets. -JIMS Aka Karl Bazile
ReplyDeleteIn 400 Blows,Antoine was falsely accused of interrupting the class. As his classmates were passing around a picture of a naked woman, when it came to him, he was caught. Although the picture didn't belong to him, he was still punished. This incident reminded me of Richard's situation. He was also falsely accused of eating nuts in class and making a mess on the floor by his aunt. These incidents show how much there is a different today and before. Before, you can accuse anyone without proof. But now, you need to have proof to accuse anyone of anything.Everything had changed so much. Since I didn't watch the whole movie, how did it end?
ReplyDeletein the movie 400 blows antoine has many obstacles such as family school and his life. He relates to a regular teenager now because most teens are stressed about all those things. when antoine caught his mother cheating on his father that couldve scared him. That is like any other teen now when you see a parent with someone else it is disturbing. throught the film antoine is called a dilenquint which makes him act like one, everyone has a view that teens are rebelious, so to keep that image we act rebelious. the differences between teens now and antoine is that he barely had any oppurtunity unlike todays teen in boston. Also teens in boston dont get mistreated like antoine did with his parents.

In 400 Blows there is a scene where Antoine skips school. When the teacher asks why he wasn't in school, Antoine lies and says his mother died. I can relate this to teens today. If they skipped school, they would at first try to make up a story for why they were absent. Although I doubt anyone would say their mother died, teens could say someone who is already dead died that day. After getting caught in his lie, Antoine decides to run away to his friend's house. In Black Boy, Richard always tried to get away from home when there was a problem he couldn't deal with.

ReplyDeleteIn one scene of the movie the 400 blows, the main character, a boy named Antoine Doinel, outs together a secret shrine of his new favorite author. He sets up pictures, and a candle. Later the candle ends up setting his curtains on fire. This is very similar to a scene in black boy where Richard sets his own house on fire. In both of these cases, neither boy’s intension was to cause any damage. Plus they were both scolded by their parents for their actions. That particular scene in the movie is an example of Antoine’s recklessness, and very compulsive. He doesn’t really think before does something outlandish. This kind of behavior ends up being his downfall. Relating this to teens today in Boston, he does share similarities. Both Antoine and many teens today act out simply because they are misunderstood. They have to deal with issues like, domestic abuse, poverty, crime and sometimes parents who are not engaged in their lives or are poorly educated. Like Antoine, these kids get involved in crime and end up in the juvenile system. Are teens the ones to blame or the ones who influence their actions?
In "The 400 Blows", the main character Antoine Doinel was seen running away from society as the people of society try to imprison him. Doinel never quite fitted in his surroundings since everyone near him tends to go against him; particularly adults such as his parents and teachers. His parents sent him to a prison for trouble-making juveniles like him. However, his parents were the ones who made him that way since they never spent moment with him and so, he feels lonely and wants to have some attention. Like Wright in "Black Boy", Wright is the main character whom society always shunned because of his personality. When Richard went away from home since his family never treated him respectfully and he felt he needed to be away from them. Both Doinel and Wright faced society in grueling ways where they feel that they are isolated, yet they have no intention of making trouble but rather they don't want to be involved with people they don't feel are very good.
